1. Kay Kenyon offers her Top Ten Fiction Tips, and they're excellent, applicable no matter what sort of fiction you write.

2. The second Obama-McCain debate is tonight! I know where I'll be this evening.

3. I've been working on my own steampunky jewelry, but [livejournal.com profile] kajafoglio points out that Heterodyne Designs has got some gorgeous stuff for sale over on Etsy. I won't stop working on mine, but those pieces are awfully tasty. I wanna know where she's getting some of those gears!

4. This is austerity week at Chez [livejournal.com profile] scarlettina. I've balanced the checkbook, paid some bills, and am now working on ways to not spend cash, finding free fun where I can and budgeting for the pricier fun I want in the weeks ahead. I think I've got this week nailed. And you know what I love? I love having credit at bookstores, especially bookstores that sell new as well as used books. Yesterday, using bookstore credit, I picked up copies of David McCullough's "John Adams" and "All the President's Men." Yeah, I'm feeling presidential (but not running!). Wonder why. :-)

5. And a poll. because why not? [Poll #1274212]

ETA: I'm wearing my Halloween socks today, so I have happy feet. (I guess that's six things, isn't it? Ah well. Life is imperfect.)

You can get gears by taking apart broken old clocks from the thrift store, paying too much on eBay, or, I'm told, visiting the Fremont Sunday Market. I haven't yet checked out the market, but apparently there's a booth that sells clock parts.

I can't wait to see your work!

My first haul of gears actually came from the Fremont market, so I'm onto that, but I'll try the thrift store thing. That could be a great source. Thank you!

I found some beautiful chain (which I don't see your Etsy friend using) at Fusion Beads on Stone Way that has gear-like elements in it. And your friend's work has inspired me to do some wire work, which up until now I hadn't been including. It may actually present the solution to come problems I've been coming up against. Yay!

They also sell little gears at the Bead Store on Roosevelt... another reason to visit my neighborhood.

Don't worry. I haven't switched mine, either. :-) I'm just today putting winter linens on the bed, but it's only the sheets--red flannel--because it's still too warm here for my down quilt.

M prefers flannel on the bed year-round...then complains that it's too hot. (Um...I don't think he reads this...)

We certainly haven't needed heat here yet with the schizophrenic midwest weather. In fact, the AC is still used regularly.

Oh -- I ate a Macintosh apple yesterday and through of you. :)

::chuckle:: Yep, I got it. And there are worse things than being thought of in relation to apples, I have to say. BTW, watch the mail....

You are *such* an East Coaster :>. My mom used to talk about doing this growing up in Maine -- but enjoyed the *not* doing this in San Francisco :>.

Mind you -- we do apples all year -- and I've not even thought about Halloween yet ;>.

See, to me, apples are an autumn/winter fruit, and they are one of the primary joys of the season for me. And yes, these are things an East Coaster would think about, but it's one of the Great Truths of my life: I'm an East Coaster living on the West Coast. I shall live accordingly.

Which is perfectly appropriate :>. I remember mom running out to shop for Macintosh apples every year as soon as Fall hit :>.

I was just thinking about what I did as a kid for fall (Left Coast Style :>):
  • Go back to school

  • Collect leaves for Thanksgiving projects

  • Buy Macintosh apples

  • Start thinking about holidays
Since we were in SF, we already had windbreakers and bathing suits in the trunk (for all weather issues) -- so the whole coat thing wasn't much of an issue :>.

None of the above. I'm just getting increasingly cranky. Although that has nothing to do with the autumn.

Dave and I were just talking about how nice it would be to find an inexpensive set of red plaid flannel sheets. (Here's hoping for a linen sale somewhere nearby before it gets too cold out!)

As for Halloween... I am attempting to put aside my baggage-laden feelings about the holiday and figure out what to do for a costume. I am KJing that night and the events include a costume contest so it would be rather inappropriate of me not to dress up for work!

From: [identity profile] scarlettina.livejournal.com
Red plaid flannel. Hm. Mine are just solid red. The whole plaid thing never worked for me.

I'm sure you'll come up with an excellent costume, baggage put firmly aside. That sort of thing is a lot of fun ... when done for fun.

Well, our bedroom walls are dark green so we figure we'd go for the whole winter "Lodge" theme. Minus the antlers and knotty pine paneling, of course. :-)

If the baggage is what I think it is -- I solve by celebrating two separate holidays ;>. Halloween is candy and costumes and hanging out with my kid -- Samhain is done either the next day or after Halloween festivities are done -- and is a completely different event.

Nope, different baggage. This is specifically my baggage, relating to a Halloween book project that fell apart this past year due to lack of funds, bad health, and an evil publisher.

Heat has already been running before this first week.

I purchased a plush facehugger on eBay for my simple Halloween costume. I might work the chestburster with an old shirt, but that's too much work in too little time.

Somehow, the fact that the facehugger is a plushy takes the bite out of it (as it were), but the image is amusing.

I don't really have winter linens, and our seasons aren't marked enough to make it worthwhile to switch out summer and winter clothes (and anyway, I have nowhere else to keep them). I'm not dressing up for Halloween. As is usual for the first half of October, the weather here is actually pretty hot by afternoon, so turning on the heat in the house isn't even a consideration. And if I bought a pumpkin now, it would be completely rotten by the end of the month.

I have purchased apples recently, but they're just Fujis.

I did take my daughter to buy her Halloween costume ("Buccaneer Beauty"), though, and cut out fabric to make her a custom pirate sack to go with it, and took her and my son to the pumpkin patch to go on the giant inflatable slide on Sunday. And I'm thinking about winter knitting. Does that count?

Date: Wed, Oct. 8th, 2008 05:17 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] scarlettina.livejournal.com
Sure it counts! It's just a different approach to the season according to your location.

As [livejournal.com profile] twilight2000 pointed out, my approach to autumn is very much an East Coast one. The truth is that the last two days were cold and rainy, but today was warm enough that I had the windows open and all the blinds drawn up to enjoy the sunshine and warmth of the day. I've put my flannel sheets on the bed, but am still using my summer quilt, a compromise based on how cool it's getting, but the down comforter won't come out for a while yet.

It all counts; just depends upon where you are and how autumn does (or doesn't) descend in your region.
