Plans change

Got word earlier today (but after I posted) that my cousin Matthew Shear, SVP at St. Martin's Press, passed away. Our plans are in flux; all I know for sure is that we're headed into the city tomorrow to attend his funeral. I just got back from shopping for appropriate clothes. This isn't the way I'd hoped to spend my vacation, but it is absolutely the right--and terrible--thing to do. ::sigh::

Sorry for your loss, Janna. Just curious, does publishing/writing run in your family, or is there a connection in that regard between your cousin and you?

There's definitely ink in my blood. My grandfather founded a printing company sometime in the 1920s, I think, that Matt's father and my mother both worked at in later years. Matthew worked at Bantam when I came in. We're definitely bookish people.

I knew we were going to be tied up with the funeral and the reception at home. But I kept thinking about how you were only 80 blocks away and that there would be just no way to see you, given everything that was going on (and the four hour roundtrip to get from East Setauket to Manhattan and back).

Yes, I didn't even suggest it because even before this unexpected death, I knew you were too busy to get together.
