Letting the days go by...

I don't know who's at the helm today at KMTT-FM, but for the last hour, a lot the songs have been about awareness of mortality and using your time wisely and so on (Green Day's "Time of Your Life," Pearl Jam's "Just Breathe," Rod Stewart's "Maggie May," and now Talking Heads' "Once in a Lifetime").

I love all of these songs and never fail to enjoy them when I hear them. But when they're all programmed together this way? I can't decide if I want to drop everything I'm doing and go hike my way across the planet with nothing but a backpack and a camera, or just throw myself off a cliff. All this musical introspection is hard to take, especially on a gray Seattle day when I'm working at home and feeling the press of time.

ETA: Oh wait: Now they're playing Joe Cocker's "You Can Leave Your Hat On." That makes up for a lot.

Do you know, that despite my age and state in life, I did not know Joe Cocker recorded that? I have a most luscious, lascivious demo version of it by Randy Newman himself.

For years, I thought that because it had been written by Randy Newman it had been recorded by him, too. I'm delighted that it was actually Joe Cocker. And I'd love to hear Newman's own version. I bet it's wonderful.

I have it. In the liner notes for his greatest hits collection, he humorously talks about why his wasn't a hit but Cocker's was. "He did it in "A". I could have done it "A", too. Might have been a hit, too"...

"I did it in E. Joe Cocker did it in C, a sixth higher. I could have done it in C. You could've heard what I was saying and the band could've played twice as loud. I might have had a hit. Kids, there's a lesson here."

(That set is still one of the better Christmas presents I've ever gotten.)

Did you ever read Spider Robinson's review of The Visible Man in Galaxy? He pointed out that every short story in the book was inventive, beautifully written--and that every single one was a downer. He strongly suggested that if you get the book you spread reading it out over a few weeks instead of reading it in one sitting the way that a reviewer has to. Unfortunately, when I found a copy I could only borrow it for a few days and had to read it all at once. He was absolutely right. I'm very glad I read it...but it made Twain's The War Prayer seem as light as the works of Odgen Nash.
