As one of the umpty-million Americans without health insurance, I'm here to tell you that I'm happy the Health Care Reform Bill has passed.

Tonight, the President said, "This is what change looks like." After a 100 year-fight, we've spent a long, hard, painful, divisive year that has ultimately been transformative, but so is birth--and that's what we just watched.

Birth! Of course! That's what all the blood, sweat, tears and yelling were. I am so relieved that it passed.

Now we have the long fight to improve it: twenty years or so between Truman's proposal and Johnson's ramrodding to get at least some of it through were, I suppose, predictable. I think if you brought them both back from the grave there is no way they would believe it took over 40 years to get from Johnson's version to the one just passed.

We all win, even the haters, on this one.

Well, you'd think, but I'm getting a lot of dissent from middle-of-the-road Dems over on my Facebook page, mostly along the lines of "it's not anything that Obama wanted" and "it's going to cost us all more." It's being proclaimed a "hot mess" and, basically, a waste of time and energy. I'm still sore about the whole abortion debacle--women always lose in these fights--but there's other stuff here that is valuable and important. Did I miss something somewhere?

There's a lot I could be angry about here, too. You know how I feel about Stupak and the forced pregnancy enthusiasts. But I'll take imperfect incremental progress over failed ideals, every time. We can fix this as we go.

And that's pretty much my perspective as well. I'd rather celebrate the successes this morning than grouse over the failures.
