Received e-mail from my friend L this afternoon that another friend of ours—SF and fantasy author Kristine Kathryn Rusch, who also writes mysteries as Kris Nelscott, among other names—is in town to do a book reading/signing at University Bookstore. L was marshalling the posse for a post-reading dinner. After work, I hustled over to the U District, met The Boyfriend at the bookstore, and was pleased to discover other friends arriving for the event as well (among them, [livejournal.com profile] frabjousdave). There was much schmoozing and catching up beforehand. Kris gave a terrific reading and talk about her influences, inspirations and research for her newest book, Stone Cribs. She then signed books for a bit. At last, a group of us adjourned to Stella's Trattoria for a late dinner.

I always enjoy a good reading, but it was the post-reading dinner I was there for. I haven't seen Kris in ages, so it was a delight to actually get to sit down and just gab and catch up and laugh together. I just love her to bits. I got home far later than I usually do (as evidenced by the time stamp on this post), and am a little too keyed up to go to bed now that it's all over. I will, but I suspect there won't be sleep for a while. This evening felt a little like a slice of a really good convention in the midst of mundane life—dinner with a group of smart, funny, friendly and intensely creative people with a lot of history together and a core understanding of each other. Yummy, loving goodness all over.
