garyomaha forwarded me a link to a
New York Times piece that
interviews Stephen Sondheim about editing Sweeney Todd for adaptation to the screen. There's some good, thoughtful commentary in here. It talks a bit about the songs that were cut and why. Some of the numbers I'm not sorry to see go ("Parlor Songs," especially--I never liked it), but it still feels like sacrilege that "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd" isn't included, or Judge Turpin's "Joanna," which I was really looking forward to seeing Alan Rickman perform. Sondheim also seems pretty sanguine (pardon the use of that word) about Depp and Bonham Carter playing his principles.
I'm still skeptical. We Shall See.
