scarlettina: (Reality Check)

I spent the better part of today researching digital SLRs online (especially at www.dpreview.com, an absolutely amazing site). Based on a number of elements, I've narrowed down my choices to the Canon EOS XTi and the Nikon D80. Each has its advantages and is attractive in its own way. The big conundrum I've got right now is that I'm already invested in Canon with my current camera and have lenses I can use with it. If I get the Nikon, I'm buying into a whole new system (with the concomitant costs). So I'm weighing my choices.

I know, I know, we should all have such problems, right? ::grin::

I'm sure you'll make the right choice...I just want to see pictures of cute little baby lions.

My co-worker had previously recommended the Canon - or was it the Canon digital rebel? And he's almost a professional.

And you'd get to use your old lenses - which is good.

And I have things to tell you about the whole photog biz.

I love my D80. The 1967 Beatles, Magical Mystery Tour, All You Need is Nikon Love, kind of love.

I did buy it so that I could continue to use my other Nikon equipment, though.

I don't think you'll go wrong with either choice. Maybe another consideration would be the package you could get. Also, I know the lenses I got for the Nikon D50 are especially geared for a digital camera , so you might be wanting to invest in new lenses anyway for that reason.

I know that the current lenses come with stabilization technology, so yes, that's a consideration.

Today, I looked at the Canon XTi, Canon 30D, and the Nikon D80 in person. The Canon XTi felt cramped to me, too small even for my small hands. Based on all my reading, this is a common criticism of the model. The Canon 30D felt slightly too big, but based on specs and reviews, it's better at higher ISOs and in low light situations than the D80, which will be important for me in Africa. The D80 felt better in my hands, though. I'm still weighing, but now it's the 30D versus the D80. The price points being almost identical, it's almost a toss-up. So...I'm still thinking.

I have a Canon digital EOS Rebel XT that's about a year and a half old, and I love love love it. I used it twice today: Once outside to take pictures of my daughter with the dog for her teacher's end-of-the-year surprise scrapbook, and once inside, in only so-so light with the flash turned off, to take pictures of the baby blanket I just finished knitting. I don't know what the competing features of the Nikon are, but I can vouch for the Canon--my picture quality is as good as it was with the old brick of an SLR I got for my birthday back in 1978. I never even liked my film EOS as much as I like this one.

I'm a Nikon girl through and through, but if you already have Canon lenses and since Canons are *almost* as good as Nikons, I would go with the EOS XTI.

I've been lusting after the Nikon. :)

The pros I know say to try them both out, and see which one feels more comfortable in your hands.

My digital camera is a Canon and I'm nothing but happy with it. If that helps.

D'oh, I'm an idiot.
Mine IS a Nikon. I have a Coolpix 7500. I love it, it's fairly small (but chunky, I've seen thinner ones). I've had it for a couple of years now.
