I think my gastric reflux has returned. No, I'm sure it's returned, and I'm not happy about it. I have COBRA and so I should probably go to the doctor about it, but I should have made the call, like, last Friday and didn't and still haven't. If I had any brains at all, I'd adjust my eating habits. As it happens, I seem to have no brains and no motivation. Big surprise. I just want to feel well enough to go to [livejournal.com profile] varina8's party this evening.

Rumor has it that the winds are returning tonight. It was and still is as still as statues outside today, though: no wind, some light rainfall, and nothing to indicate especially inclement weather except for thickly overcast skies. It's pitch black outside right now and I've no idea what to expect for the rest of the evening. I did go to the grocery store today to purchase fresh batteries and food that doesn't need to be cooked or refrigerated, just in case. Besides my jaunt to the post office, it was the only thing of any substance that I achieved today.

Come holiday time, I will often save any gift packages I receive in the mail to be opened one per night of Chanukah because it's nice to have gifts to look forward to. Tonight's package was a gift I purchased for myself. As you know, Bob, I spent quite a bit of time on eBay in service of the auction to benefit [livejournal.com profile] jaylake's neighbor the last couple of weeks. One of the side effects of being on eBay is, well, being on eBay. Tonight's self-gift was a tiny little indulgence that I won an auction for, a Longaberger Proudly American Button Basket, protector, and liner, a sweet little thing with star-shaped rivets that will not only be useful but also nice to display. These baskets are collectibles (especially in the Midwest), to which I was turned on by [livejournal.com profile] brumbjorn back when she was a Longaberger representative, and every now and then I add one to my collection. They appreciate in value and at some point I may auction off some of mine. As things stand now, however, I use almost every one that I have pretty regularly and they give me pleasure so . . . yippee!

Nothing else of note to post at the moment. I am feeling pretty bleh and wishing for nonblehness. And I don't want to eat anything else because that will only exacerbate the blehness. Bleh. So there.

:: smile:: Yes, sir. I've just left a call at my doctor's office. I promise to report the situation as things develop.

Button Baskets

I have a button basket! It was my grandmother's and when I was a child it had all sorts of wonderful buttons in it. I did get the basket, but for some reason the buttons weren't in it, so I've started my own collection.

It started life out, it seems, as one of my mother's purses, before she married my dad.

My mom had a button basket that she got as a little girl on the reservation where her folks homesteaded. My sister almost danced in fury after mom's death when she saw that it had been left in a window and sunbleached. I don't know if we've got it or if she took it: I always liked it.

Can't help much on the reflux, unfortunately: the only thing I know of that helps is from a science squib in The New York Times about eight years ago. Some researchers found that the thing that killed heartburn the best was swallowing lots of saliva: i.e. chewing on chewing gum or sucking on lozenges. Dad tried it because he had bad heartburn from time to time and was shocked to find he was able to give up Tums. Since heartburn is to AR as athlete's foot is to flesh-eating bacteria I'm not going to urge it on you but if you find yourself with a stick of gum around it might be worth trying...

Jay said it first, but I'll say it again: Take care of yourself. Enjoy the party too.

Sorry you're feeling yucky.

Have you tried Tagamet or Zantac?

Nope, but I'll note those down and get out tomorrow to pick some up. Thanks for the suggestions.

One of the reasons I'm cautious about trying news meds is that some medications give me night terrors, as did the first reflux medicine my doctor prescribed. Obviously, there's no way to tell how I'm going to respond to anything until I try it, but you can understand why I'm a little nervous about trying new meds. "Terrors" is actually a mild word for what I experience in these episodes.

Still, it's worth a shot to not be so incredibly uncomfortable.

Night terrors from anti-GERD medicine? Huh. How bizarre. I'm sorry to hear that. Especially since, unlike James Spader, you can't get Wm Shatner to sleep with you.

Yep. And yes, it is bizarre. But I never know what's going to set it of, so Ijust swallow and hope for the best. Not fun, though.

I'm a little to exhausted to go into great detail at the moment, but I've had some amount of luck with partially regulating acid reflux through enzymes, and herbal stuff -- Super Digestaway enzyme tabs at every meal, acidohpilus, DGL licorice tabs, etc. When I have my brain back I'd be glad to write up more. Not that it always works, but when it doesn't it's usually my fault for skipping parts of my regimen or eating stuff I know full well I shouldn't.

I'll be happy to hear whatever you suggest when you have the time and brain for it.

You were missed, but we will find another day. A group of us decided to go see a matinee of The Curse of the Golden Flower at the Neptune Saturday afternoon if you'd like to join us.

I'm glad to hear you called the doctor. I was worried. C had pretty good luck with Tagamet for his reflux.
