Ugh. I got sucked in. And even made a response!

Perfectly nice people do that all the time.

LoL I try to be nice :D It was pretty interesting to read. I just tend to feel like (and of course this isn't all inclusive) that a lot of the loud people against fanfic that I come across don't actually seem to know what it is. I once had a long conversation with a writer-friend about what would happen if her son came across a perfectly well-written, G-rated fanfic online about his favorite series. "What if he thought [the original author] wrote it? What if he thought it was canon?! Oh my god! It would be horrible and destroy him for the rest of his life!" Since most fanfic writers are good about putting their names on things and... okay, I'm going on a tangent.

Anyway. It's one of those writerworld debates that never seem to die. I did also link your comments to some of my fanfic-crazy friends and they really appreciated your words.

Thanks!

Thank you too.

What series was it that the kid liked? That's a weird response. It's not like canon has bactericidal effects or something.

I think her response was also tainted by the general "OMG IT'S STEALING" attitude I see. Once I got her past that, she needed other reasons to justify it's badness. Dunno. I've found that these are one of those debates topics where people are on one side or the other of the fence and don't often change their minds.

I want to say the series was "Animorphs" or one of those other long-running YA series with shapeshifter hero sorts.

(Sorry to hijack your thread, Janna!)

We are not responsible for the beliefs of extremely silly people.

Fanfic is completely natural. I've never set any of my fanfic to paper, but I can't tell you how many times I've imagined myself on the Enterprise or in the TARDIS.

My diocese has been trying to push the idea of simply telling our stories as a way of sharing our faith.

Excellent. I especially like PNH's smackdowns in the comments.

I'm guessing I'm one of the smackdowns.

I still feel uncomfortable with the concept.
