Three choices for things to do tonight:
1) Karaoke with [livejournal.com profile] livingdeadpan and crew
2) Stay home and watch the Olympics Opening Ceremonies
3) Catch dinner with a friend from out of town.

Option 1 became less and less attractive as I heard the traffic reports for this evening's commute. Besides, in the end, I knew I'd see the people I really care about tomorrow night at the next concert. I still want to karaoke with you folk; it just wasn't the right night.

Option 2 was ruled out fairly quickly because I've decided from now on that unless I'm feeling really crappy or desperately need private time (which I often seem to do), if human company is an option, then I will always choose people over TV. The TV will always be there. The people may not.

Option 3 was the option that made sense and, in the end, was the most appealing. It meant I would get to see [livejournal.com profile] jaylake, up from Portland, and maybe some other cool people, too. I hightailed it over to the University Bookstore and ran into Jay and his group of dinner companions as they headed down The Ave in search of a restaurant. As it turned out, [livejournal.com profile] markbourne and his E were there, along with other fine folks including Ken Scholes (and an old friend of his with remarkably blue eyes and a cigarette-roughened bass voice that I won't soon forget). We had a marvelous dinner, laughed a great deal, and then headed back to the bookstore, where Jay, Ken, and two other writers spoke about the Writers of the Future Contest, the state of the publishing industry, breaking into the business, and stuffing tentacles into the sidewalks. I love my friends. I enjoyed it all a great deal.

It's another clear, balmy night in Seattle, and if I didn't need the sleep very badly, I might stay up later than I plan to (which is to say not very late at all). But I've got a concert tomorrow night, and I want to spend tomorrow before then going to the gym, writing, practicing music and possibly napping a little more so I'm not quite so messed up on Sunday as I was last weekend.

And, for your entertainment, I have been defined . . .

And good for you on the tv thing. I find myself using it purely as background noise, most days, but you're right, people is better. Tastier, too,
