Of a-many things

Another laundry-list post today because I've been astonishingly busy this week and am still without my computer (on which more in a moment).

Monday: Had dinner with BC at Bucca di Beppo and ate entirely too much but had a fine time anyway.

Tuesday: Was treated to a belated birthday dinner at Marrakesh by [livejournal.com profile] ironymaiden and her C and was made to feel like an absolute princess. What a perfectly delightful evening and what wonderful food! My hosts encouraged me to be adventurous and try the hare for dinner. After getting over the whole "But I'll be eating a soft, fuzzy bunny" part of the evening, I enjoyed my entrée without a second thought. I still daydream about the bastilla royale, which the review I've linked to above goes on about in some detail, the most excellent part of the meal. I highly recommend this place to all my local crowd.

Wednesday: [livejournal.com profile] varina8 and I attended the Suzanne Vega/Marc Cohn concert at the Woodland Park Zoo. This was the show for which I won tickets from Metropolitan Market earlier this year and it was just great. I've never been much of a fan of Suzanne Vega, but I’ve been a fan of Marc Cohn since "Walking in Memphis." If he's been to Seattle before I was unaware of it so this was a special treat for me. Cohn played two songs I'd never heard before: one he wrote for use at the '92 Olympics ("Old Soldier," recorded by David Crosby) and a brand new one ("I Will Be Your Witness"). As I wrote to a friend earlier today, the performance was bluesy and soulful and entirely too short.

Cohn’s play list
Summertime (Gershwin!)
Already Home
Perfect Love
Paper Walls
Rainy Season
Old Soldier
Walking in Memphis
Dig Down Deep (segued into an "Already Home" reprise)
True Companion
I Will Be Your Witness

Tonight will be, as always, my writing workshop. What this means, however, is that I won't be able to pick up my computer! I finally received a call from the Apple Store that the machine is ready. In fact, because of my plans tomorrow evening, in all likelihood I won't be able to pick up my computer until Saturday! At this point, of course, I'm fairly inured to its absence and will just have to swallow my trouble until the weekend. I've gotten a remarkable amount of reading done while the machine's been at the shop, and more regular sleep, too. Hmmm...

Sigh. I would have loved to see this show, as I am a fan of both Cohn and Vega, but didn't get tickets in time (mostly because my work schedule has been in so much flux). I don't suppose you have the setlist for Suzanne Vega's set?

Set list for Vega? Nope. I can suss out some of what I heard from memory, but I'm not an expert on her music. She played the hits, of course: "Luka" and the diner song. She played a song about a soldier and a queen, a song called "I'm Not Your Maggie May," and a song called "In Liverpool." Don't remember the titles of the others. I enjoyed it all, but I really did focus on Cohn. Wish I could offer more help.

Sigh again. I'd have loved to hear "The Queen and the Soldier" live. Not a fan of "I'm Not Your Maggie May," though - that one's on the automatic skip list.

Thanks, I'm probably better off not knowing what else I missed.

I once wrote an entire movie based on "Queen and the Soldier."

You didn't tell me Suzanne Vega was on the bill! I love her! Have all her records and with the exception of that one stupid song that actually got radio play, think she's rather a fine singer/songwriter.

I'll make you a disk if'n you'd like to hear more...

I'm jealous that you got to see Suzanne Vega, I'm another fan of hers. =)

Glad that you had a good time, and also glad that the laptop is finally done. I'd implode without my computer. Maybe that's why I have four now? Backups? Hmmm.

This is the first time I've seriously considered having a back-up machine in the house. The question, of course, is the cost which, frankly, I can't spring for right now. I suspect it will happen, however, before the end of 2006 if I can manage it.

Since you're a Mac user, like me, you could just look into investing in a refurbished machine, or just a used one from a trusted source.

You could make good use of the older iMacs, or something like that. Heck, honestly given that I think you only do Web use, emailing and writing on the machines you could even get the oldest iMacs, the all in one tube units (colored ones) and run everything you need. They'll run Tiger and everything else.

It's amazing really how backwards compatible OSX is really.

My only concern with the color-blob iMacs are how much space they take up. They're really desk hogs. I'm not surprised they're backward compatible, given how (relatively) recently they were issued.

Yea they are quite large, so that is a concern. The second generation white ones, with the swivel arm, is probably the best bet for a secondary machine, though, they're a bit more pricey.

The strange thing is that the color blob Macs were from 1998-1999 range, if I'm correct, and they're able to run an OS that came out in 2005 and all it's software without much issue. Imagine trying to run XP and Word on a 200 MHZ Pentium 2? =)

I had no idea you were a Vega fan. What d'ya know? Would I like a disc? Thank, but no. I was impressed but not so impressed that I need more. I appreciate the offer, however.

I hear awesome things about Marrakesh -- [livejournal.com profile] sarastro_us loves it there, and he keeps telling me he'll take me there some day. I'm looking forward to it. =)

It's quite good and remarkably affordable based on the prices I paid attention to.
