Step up to the mic and put on your headphones
Thu, Oct. 1st, 2009 07:42 pmToday I did some voice-over work. Didn't get paid for it, but anyone who plays Exteel (a free MMO that looks a whole lot like Mechwarrior--but you didn't hear that from me) starting in December or January sometime will hear me and I'll be credited.
A couple of months ago, a call went out to the staff at NCsoft. Apparently, the team had run out of funds but wanted more voice-over in the game. Of course, actress-wannabe that I am, I auditioned, and I landed the voice of Sarah, the default operator, which means most every player will hear me at one point or another.
Today I went down to McCord Studios in Sodo for the recording session. Back during my Expedia days, I recorded a couple of pieces for Expedia Radio, so I've been in a studio before. It's just odd, though, to walk into a small room that's completely sound-dead. The walls were covered with spongy, dark gray foam to deaden outside sounds and eliminate any play the walls might give to my voice. The script tray and mic were adjusted, I put on my headphones, and we began. My job was to repeat each of my 68 lines three times with three different interpretations. I had to make my voice sound a little younger, so I spoke in a slightly higher register than usual. As we worked, I remembered a number of vocal tricks I learned during my days in SLGC--glottal stops to separate words that would otherwise slur together, tone changes for emphasis, and so on. I found myself more than once picturing myself as my character so I stayed in character--though I'll never be a leggy, twenty-something, combat operator with a uniform hem just below my butt. ::grin::
We moved quickly through each line, and I only had to do two or three of the lines over again. Out of 68, that's not bad and, based on the reactions I got when I emerged from my little sound-proof closet, I did well. The woman who did the organization for the project said she'd keep my name on file; they might want to use me again, which I'd enjoy.
If you play the game, you'll also hear
anaka,
shellyrae, and
cyndicision, among others.
I got such a kick out of doing this. I hope I have an opportunity to do more.
