Bad, bad me

Yesterday, I was the personification of The Stress Bunny, unhappy about almost everything.

Today, the sky is clear, the sun is shining, and the world feels somehow much better. After doing the required job searching, I spent the balance of the morning reading this week's Time magazine which has both extensive coverage on John Paul II and his life and legacy, and an excerpt from Jane Fonda's new autobiography. The pope and Barbarella: what more could you ask for in a morning's reading, really? Then I read the latest issue of TEC News (the smashed penny newsletter I used to edit) cover to cover and got antsy about my collection which lead to...

...doing something today I'm not supposed to do right now: I spent money on myself. I discovered a coin shop about a ten minute drive from my condo in a neighborhood I didn't know very well but now plan to get to know better. I bought a bunch of storage supplies for the smashed penny collection, as well as a few smashed pennies. (Digression: Coin dealers can really be so contrary, mostly to their own detriment: many, not all but many, don't respect elongated coin collectors, don't bother to learn anything about the hobby, but then get taken by Those in The Know—like, well, okay, me. I discovered a Seattle World's Fair coin in this guy's inventory marked at $1.50; I should be able to flip it on eBay for, probably, up to 10 times that price. It's so easy to research these things. Gee!) It was a fine collector-y wallow, as I found some other little things for my collection also and marked a number of things I'll want to go back for when finances allow.

Then I stopped at the supermarket to pick up dinner fixin's and indulged in a wine guide and a copy of the most recent Wine Spectator.

I feel positively spoiled. All this pleasure for under a total of $30 (more of which was spent on the book and the magazine than on the coins and supplies). When I'm liquid again there will be real shopping for, like, clothes and other little things to make me happy. But this will do for the nonce.
