I'm with Elizabeth on the switching shoes approach, though in these days of airlines charging for bags, it's hard to pack lots of shoes.
When I was abusing my feet by training to walk a marathon, I learned about paper tape. It's not really very papery. It's very thin and stays put. Put it on the spot that's likely to become a problem, and your odds get much better.
