scarlettina: (UFO: Believe)
My only true goal for today was to spend no money at all, not a dime. I have so far succeeded.

I also put on the winter linens (red flannel sheets, down quilt--can't wait to cuddle down!), hung a thermometer on the balcony, read quite a bit, watched some ghost TV, and, as usual, looked for work.

I wish I could get as organized about seasonal clothing as I am about seasonal bedding. I'm very methodical about the latter: what sheets when, which comforters when, and so on. Maybe that will be one of this season's uber-goals: developing a system for rotating seasonal clothing. Any suggestions?

Provoked by one of the shows I watched, I did a little 'net surfing on the subject of Jewish beliefs about possession. Halfway through the article, I remembered that years and years ago I did a lot of reading on the subject. I'll have to go through my library and see whether or not I donated my books with such information to the local chapter of Hillel. I like this idea that exorcism is a healing, not an expulsion. Whether you're a restless spirit or possessed by same, you must be treated with kindness. Whether or not one believes in such things, I prefer the Jewish approach. No one, I suspect, is surprised.

That surfing led to other subjects including but not limited to exorcism in general, Anneliese Michel, polycephaly (about which I've read a great deal before, including much about Abigail and Brittany Hensel, whom I can't help but admire), diprosopus, and other wonders. Sometimes, doing this sort of reading, I feel like a voyeur. At the same time, how can one not be curious about the world, even its oddest manifestations, even its apparent miracles? Even my Uncle Larry the Engineer was fascinated by dowsing after a trip to England--but he was interested in the whole world, too.

My mom instilled my interest in the paranormal. She always had books of that sort around, about UFOs, ghosts, ESP and clairvoyance. I couldn't help but absorb some of it. The older I've gotten the more skeptical I've become, but it doesn't mean I've lost interest. I just approach all those subjects from a very different perspective than I did as a kid. One way or another, it's still fun, it's still interesting, it's very human. And humans are always interesting.
