The habits of old cats: My cat-sitter tells me that old cats like to lick their food down into a flat patty at the bottom of their bowls, and that they'll only eat it if it's sculpted back into a little hill. I thought Merlin was the only cat who did this but apparently it's a widespread phenomenon. I wonder why. Good thing I'm unemployed right now, otherwise Merlin would go hungry. Also, many older cats seem to prefer drinking from the faucet than from the bowl. Go figure.
More on Merlin:
ironymaiden was the first to note it, but Merlin's developed old cat fur. I've realized that it's because he's not grooming himself much anymore. I've taken to dampening a paper towel with warm water (not to sopping, just to damp) and stroking him to imitate cleaning to keep him looking handsome. He seems to enjoy it. It's a constant reminder, though, of how skinny he is. He's also a little less sure-footed when attempting to stick a landing as he jumps. He's been a little listless lately. I'll be calling the vet today so I can bring him in for a look-see.
Our president, the poor grammarian: Yeah, I'm talking about Obama. Well,
I won't slam him, but
a NY Times contributor feels free to do so. Our 44th president isn't perfect but you won't
ever hear him say "noo-kyular" and mean it. Tonight's address to Congress should be interesting.
Oscar notes: I watched the Oscars start to finish and haven't posted about it. For me, this is remarkable. In short: Enjoyed Hugh Jackman, especially his call for "more show and less biz" at the Oscars. I have a crush on Anne Hathaway. I hated the "winners introducing nominees" thing--show me clips, dammit! I also hated the way the montages were managed. And though I loved Queen Latifah's number, I hated the way the images of those who died in 2008 were presented. It may have been great for those in the theater, but the TV direction sucked. Sean Penn, Dustin Lance Black, Kunio Kato and Kate Winslet gave the best acceptance speeches. I am thankful beyond expression that there was no orchestra-cutting-off-the-speeches. Give the people their moment!
Jessica Biel and
Tilda Swinton looked like they were wearing potato sacks. Penelope Cruz looked beautiful, but the dress looked
a little too much like a wedding gown. Best dressed of the evening, IMHO:
Viola Davis,
Angelina Jolie,
Virginia Madsen,
Sarah Jessica Parker, and
Marissa Tomei. Is it me, or was there way too much white and far too many trains?
Social me: I had the happy privilege to spend quality time with
mischief_wa and
twilight2000 at the former's baby shower on Sunday (and won a DVD copy of "Sorcerer's Stone"). Spent a lovely Friday evening with
ironymaiden. Went for walkies with
e_bourne and her sweet doggie Kai earlier last week (from which I will produce pictures at some point). I'm blessed with most excellent friends.
