scarlettina: (DrWho: Plus One)
It's been a while since I posted anything about Doctor Who 2005, mainly because there hasn't been much to post about, but it's time to gear up again because a couple of things are going on that I want to talk about.

First, I'm going to take a page from [livejournal.com profile] davidlevine and tell you to go read [livejournal.com profile] bovil's post on why you should watch Doctor Who on the SciFi Channel even if you already own the DVDs, have the show on tape, or Bittorented the entire series. The short version is that SciFi seems to have made a minimal commitment to the series' success in the U.S. While I'm not overly concerned about the show's availability for myself since I can watch it on CBC, which is available in the Seattle area, I am concerned for the friends back east who I know would enjoy this show hugely. The new Doctor deserves time, effort and support, so I'm here to offer some of that.

Edit: As folks are asking, the show premieres on SciFi on Friday, March 17 at 9 PM. They'll be showing the first two episodes, "Rose" and "The End of the World" back to back. The comments below about these two episodes contain no spoilers.

Second, I finally received my Season One DVDs and, in a moment of madness, stayed up almost until midnight watching the first two episodes, "Rose" and "The End of the World" plus the Eccleston interview included on Disc 2. I hadn't seen the episodes since [livejournal.com profile] hgross and [livejournal.com profile] evego shared them with me lo these many months ago, and I remembered very quickly how and why I fell in love with the series. A big part of it was The Doctor's charm and darkness (a winning combination, no question). Another big part of it was Rose's willingness to leap in where others (i.e., Mickey) feared to tread. Rose and the Doctor's chemistry is just terrific, and the stories, even when they stray into Classic Who hokiness (which they don't very much at all), are engaging, entertaining—hell, they're just fun. Experiencing Rose's culture shock all over again—encountering aliens for the first time, getting a new and not-so-flattering perspective on her boyfriend—was still just as effective the second time around. It all just really works.

If I have one complaint about the series—and this is the only one at the moment—it's that they really need a better sound editor. The guy just doesn't know how to mix music down beneath the dialog. It just gets overwhelming sometimes. I mean, you never miss a word of the dialog because of the music, but it does get to an irritating volume every now and then. Be that as it may, however...

Watching these episodes now, knowing what I know about what's to come, is so much fun: seeing the seeds of the relationship that will develop betwen Rose and the Doctor, the threads of what will soon weave itself into the first season's overarching story arc. So great. Yes, I'm a happy Whovian.

God, I'm such a geek. ::grin::
