Theater makes me happy. Clever theater makes me happier. Last night, as part of the ongoing [livejournal.com profile] frabjousdave Farewell Festivities, Dave, [livejournal.com profile] ironymaiden, her hubby C and I went to dinner at Dragonfish for dinner and then saw "Late Night Catechism" at ACT.

First a mention about Dragonfish: Located at 722 Pine Street downtown at the corner of Pine and 8th. Excellent Asian food served with some flair. Nice atmosphere. Terrific sake samplers for those as are inclined. One of my dinner companions complained that every time he goes to the restaurant they tell him the place is full whether or not there are actually tables available, and try to persuade him to sit at the bar. They did say that this time, but ultimately came up with a table for us. I'd be interested in hearing if anyone else has this experience there. In the end, the service was prompt and the food quite good. Overall, I'd recommend it.

Late Night Catechism is a one-woman, interactive show. The premise is that you're attending an adult, evening catechism class with Sister. The venue is decorated to look like a parochial school classroom, with the expected Catholic school trappings: portraits of the Pope, JFK and Mother Theresa, a lurid painting of the crucified Jesus, a teacher's desk strewn with instructoriana and Catholic tchachkes. Despite advertisements that suggest you're in for a raucous evening with a tough-as-nails nun living up to every Catholic school stereotype, what you get is a sweet-but tough nun who's slightly goofy and has a sense of humor. But don't put your hands in your pockets when you stand up to speak. Don't rest your feet on her podium. And when offered, don't choose the KitKat Bar over the little figurine of the Virgin Mary. The comedy is funny and fun, never mean, but clearly enough to evoke the horrors of parochial school in those who attend. It was almost as much fun to watch the audience react as it was to watch Sister herself.

We purchased discount tickets at Ticket/Ticket on the second floor of the Broadway Market in Capitol Hill and saved about $10 per ticket. I'm told they've got discount tix for LNC almost every night, so it might not be a bad way to go out for a relatively inexpensive evening on the town.
