Working late...
Wed, Sep. 17th, 2003 07:40 pm...editing a novel, and I'm here to tell you that no matter how many novels you write, you've always got one more thing to learn. My notes on this novel--written by someone with several under his belt--include the most basic comments: Show, don't tell. Insert sensory detail. Insert a little stage direction so I know what's going on. Watch passive constructions. Use adverbs sparingly! [g]
It's far easier, in some respects, to be an editor than a writer. Editing, after all, is refined critiquing, isn't it, as well as ensuring rules are followed or, if they're broken, that they're broken well and for a reason? It's as much an art, in its way, as writing is.
At the moment, however, the editing is hard work, and I've got many more pages to edit before I'm through.
I've had fresh strawberries for dinner tonight, and not many. What I'm looking forward to is my first Macintosh apple of the season. To me, it's autumn when the Macs arrive in the grocery stores: sweet, juicy, not too hard but not too soft, green on one side and red on the other. Mmm! Can't wait!
