I haven't read the book, so I can't speak to his position or character as written in fiction. In the play, he seems to be a terribly self-impressed little boy--I'm Gavroche! I'm great! I can do all this stuff you guys can't!--who brags on himself a lot and then gets himself shot unnecessarily. He just irritates me.
