Glad to know I'm not the only one who noticed

The New York Times is running a piece called "Obama, McCain and 'The West Wing'," which compares current events to the events of the last two seasons of the show. It hasn't escaped me how similar fiction and reality have become. Clearly, I'm not the only one. In fact, I still want to know who's doing Senator Obama's speech writing because I've heard echoes of Aaron Sorkin dialog in all of his language. Maybe he's a fan . . . or maybe his writers are fans or, in my fantasy world, Sorkin's doing the writing on the QT, though I doubt it. Anyway . . . point is, in this case, reality isn't stranger than fiction; it's remarkably similar.

Much of Obama's major speech writing (winning primary, big speech on race) is being done by Obama himself.

So my first theory may have some gas. Maybe he's a fan. :-)

My house has been watching Season 1 of 24, (made in 2001) in which a black man is running for President. Last night, it just kept reminding us of how close the elections are, in a rather depressing way.

At the time, that seemed pretty improbable: a black man on the day of the primary that would seal the Democratic nomination, with the implication that if he won the nomination it was pretty much a given that he'd become President. When I saw The Speech in 2004, I said to everyone who would listen, "he's like the President on 24, in real life", and said that he should be President, not just a newbie Senator for Illinois.
