Numismatic science fiction glee

I just discovered that Monnaie de Paris (that's the French mint) is issuing a series of coins honoring Jules Verne and they're gorgeous. And they're kind of expensive, even the silver (as opposed to the gold) ones. But they're so pretty. I'll be ordering the least expensive of the bunch just so I can have the single commemorative (at five euros, how could even I complain?). But when I'm feeling a little more solvent, I may come back for "Around the World in 80 Days" or "From the Earth to the Moon." Hard to resist.

These wouldn't be the first coins I've ordered from Monnaie de Paris. I also have an Einstein commemorative and a space travel commemorative. They do beautiful work.

Oh and, yes, I left work early and came home to rest. I got out of bed for this because I found an item about the Verne series in The Numismatist and had to order and then squee. I have now done both. Mission accomplished!

The British have been doing a bunch of neat ones lately, too. I like this one. (I have the uncirculated folder version, not the silver or gold proof coins.)

Oh! I have that one, too! I was just looking at it last night. You're right: lovely work.

These come in silver, too? I'm only finding the gold and the nickle-aluminum. I collect silver art coins when I'm in funds, which means I sold my collection at one point and now have a few favorite coins. [livejournal.com profile] kinzel is a big Verne fan, and I could maybe sorta justify a silver as a belated 25th anniversary gift...

I thought the coins on the second page were silver. Was I wrong? Hmm...

Was I wrong?

No, you were right; I missed the "next" button up at the corner of the screen. *smacks forehead*
