This is one of those really problematic situations. I've always been amazed when I run into this sort of situation with a friend because, frankly, my reasoning is like yours. I may not like something in particular but hey, when opinions get rationalized into legislation (both liberal and conservative), then the opportunities for discrimination really explode.
You'd think conservatives would support same sex marriage because, hey, contributes to community stability and that's the kind of thing that ideologically a conservative SHOULD support. No-brainer. But because of a certain degree of uncertainty about their sexuality exists amongst US conservatives of a certain ilk, it's an issue.
(I am reading American Gomorrah right now, and kicking myself majorly for not continuing to document and follow the rise of right-wing evangelical Dominionism. I had a front row seat for the development of one particular strain of it here in Oregon and I could have written a heckava book about it...if I'd kept better records. Well, maybe I still could....)
