I want a Macintosh apple every day for the rest of my life. Winter, spring, summer, fall: I want one a day every day. They are sweet and juicy and delicious, and they are proof that God loves me and wants me to be happy. I have enough in my refrigerator to have one a day for the next seven. After that, I probably won't see them again until next year and I will mourn piteously. Until that last apple, I shall enjoy my apples one per day, stretching out the pleasure as much as I can, despite my desire to devour them all in one sitting. One a day. That's the plan.

Are Macs that rare on the West Coast? Up here in New England, they're pretty much the default apple.

Macs are lovely, but we've discovered the joys of Romes here for the past several years. Good for either eating or cooking with, they have (for us) a good balance between tart and sweet.

Macintoshes are only good when they're local and very fresh. I buy a few every year hoping they'll be good, but they're almost always disappointing. Apple season is when I miss upstate New York the most.

Mmmmm... Sometimes I get lucky and go to Central Market on the right weekend and can find a small supply of Macs. They are indeed the perfect apple.

I'll happily eat a Honeycrisp as a 2nd favorite.

My mom used to say almost the same thing - I guess we don't have anything quite like them out here on the west coast.
