Came home last night from work comepletely exhausted. At the time, I had no idea why I was so tired I could barely keep my eyes open. After an evening of doing not very much at all, it occurred to me that my sleepiness may have been a result of being wakened at 5:30 in the morning by a neighbor running the dishwasher. If you ever doubt which is a worse crime, running the washing machine until around 10 PM or running the dishwasher at 5:30 AM, have no doubt: it's the latter. This morning it was 7 AM. I wonder which dishes are so critically important that they must be clean before sunrise.
As a result of the noise at a ridiculous hour, I rolled over and grabbed my current bedside book. I'm reading "Point of Honour" by our very own
madrobins and what fun it is! It's been a long time since a book made me just keep turning the pages, made me eager to do so. Set in the Regency era, it's about Miss Sarah Tolerance, a Fallen Woman and Agent of Inquiry for those who wish to have a matter investigated with discretion. The story starts when she's engaged by a gentleman to retrieve a fan, and follows our heroine as the mission becomes much more complicated than Miss Tolerance expected. She's a terrific, intelligent protagonist and the story's just a fine mystery. If you'd like a taste before you buy, read an excerpt here. Among other things, this excerpt is proof positive that one can start a story with a fine first sentence without the necessity of immediate and urgent action; this is all about setting, atmosphere and, frankly, excellent and engaging narrative voice. Fun stuff and time well spent.
No solid plans for today with the exception of a training session at the gym. Ms. Robins has inspired me to look back at the chapters I abandoned and reconsider some key issues with them that I might move forward with the story. I should probably dig out my older published stories and start getting them typed into my computer so I can start submitting them for foreign markets. There was some discussion last night of catching a flick with
ironymaiden or maybe seeing
oldmangrumpus sometime this weekend. In short, the weekend is pleasingly freeform right now, and I rather like it that way after the convention last weekend. The simpler things are, the better to shake off the stress of the week.
