Dream
I dreamed that I was a freshman just starting college. I arrived with nothing more than a gym bag full of clothes, which I took to my dorm room (which I was apparently sharing with three other girls) and dropped next to a bed I scouted out to be mine. I walked around the school to discover it was of modern construction, lots of glass corridors. When I returned to the room, I discovered that someone else had taken my bed and that the only bed left was half as long as I am tall and shoved into a corner. My kitties both waited there. I discovered that one of them had done his business on another girl's rug. I took the rug with the intention of having it cleaned, as well as of finding a bed of reasonable size. and on my way back got notice that I'd received a package. It was a huge carton. I took it all the way back to the glass corridor that led to the dorm room only to discover that it was so big I couldn't fit it through the door to the corridor. I collasped and cried. And discovered that the carton was full of lemons. And satsumas.

New LJer
Please welcome [livejournal.com profile] nickstonelion, whom I have, in the past, referred to here as NiFF. Here's hoping we see more of him around here. (Edit: He tells me he may change his account name. Watch this space for more news as things develop....)

Passages
Coretta Scott King was laid to rest yesterday, bid farewell by four presidents, a number of senators, and other VIPs, and with the thoughts, prayers, and admiration of a nation changed by what she and her husband accomplished. A remarkable woman.

Current events
The rioting in Islamic countries in reaction to those Danish cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed leaves me sad and cold and a little hopeless. Iran's call for cartoons depicting the Holocaust leaves me angry and baffled and, frankly, a little resigned, trying to figure out how and why Jews should be the target of a reaction to something that had nothing to do with us. On the other hand, it's nothing new: Saudi Arabia (as [livejournal.com profile] the_monkey_king pointed out to me yesterday) has published anti-Semitic cartoons for years, but Jews and Israelis have never rioted in the streets in response. Perhaps it's because we get the whole "freedom of speech" thing, or maybe it's because we understand that a cartoon can't change our faith. It's more than that, though. And that may be an extended post for another time, when I'm feeling a little less turbulent about the whole subject. Of course, I know that this rioting is about more than merely the publication of these cartoons, and President Bush's assertion that this business is nothing to do with the US is disingenuous but not unexpected. Where does it end?

Locally, Mike McGavick, a Republican challenger for Senator Maria Cantwell's seat, has started running television ads. I looked at his Web site to discover that it's remarkably devoid of actual content. He goes on in the TV ad about personal responsibility and so on, but doesn't talk about anything anywhere on the site that is specific or actually puts a stake down in the political landscape. For the moment, as a result, my esitimation is that he's slippery. Maria will get my vote anyway, but I'll be watching to see what this guy does.

And now for something completely different
In other news, this may be the world's biggest bunny. Lookit those ears! Thanks for the tip, [livejournal.com profile] holyoutlaw.

Senate Primary

I am intrigued by the Web Page of Maria's opponent in the primary. I am getting so involved with local politics that I received this link from four different lists within two hours of the Scalia confirmation vote.

Mark Wilson is one of the fifty-five former military personnel running for the Federal House or Senate as a Democrat. Sure, his chances aren't great, but a lot of people are livid over Cantwell's failure to vote for the filibuster. We'll see.
