Facing the Day
Fri, Sep. 19th, 2003 08:39 amIt's Friday, and it's one of those threshold days, full of anticipation. Why? See below:
International Talk Like A Pirate Day
Many people have posted hereabouts on Live Journal about International Talk Like A Pirate Day, but for me, this could mean a really interesting day at work. You see, I work for a game company, a place where some of the staff got together to go see Pirates of the Carribean in costume. Yesterday, a couple of people were actually practicing their pirate vocabularies. For myself, I may spout an "Aye, matey!" when asked a question, or exclaim "Shiver me timbers!" when things get a little noisy, but I'll have to squelch the urge to call recalcitrant authors "scury knaves," though I'm sure it'll be difficult. It's simply Just Not Done, however. I guess that's the ole New York training showing its face.
Foolscap
This evening, Foolscap, a teeny local convention, commences. Guests this year are Greg Bear and Sergio Aragones, about whom I knew nothing until he was proposed as a guest a couple of years back, thus demonstrating the holes in my comics education. I'm looking forward to the convention although, coming so close upon the heels of my WorldCon/New York/illness period, it feels like a little too much for me. Oddly enough, my greatest need, right now, seems to be just some simple, quiet, private time...but here I am preparing for a con. It's made even harder by the choice to not take a room at the hotel (simply can't afford it at the moment), so that finding private, quiet space will be difficult during the day. At conventions, I often need at least an hour's break from things right around 4ish each day to rejuvenate. (At conventions, I call that hour when I begin to just wilt under the craziness "con fade.") I'm not complaining, really, just observing and ruminating about what's to come.
I'm scheduled to sit on five panels this weekend, and to moderate two of them:
Sweetie's been shaming me by preparing fully for his roster of panels. I rarely come studied and prepared for these things, but I'll probably take some time out to prepare tonight. I've worked extra late at the office the last couple of days. Perhaps tonight I'll forego the overtime and just head straight out. We shall see.
