I found the movie a disappointment, although I love the play enough that I still enjoyed sitting through it. My biggest disappointment was Russell Crowe, who seemed stiff and dull most of the time. The Javert vocal on my Original Broadway Cast recording has a nicely sneering Snape-like quality, alternating with that rich baritone, and it makes "Stars" and "Confrontation" real standouts. I missed that in the movie. I missed that a LOT.

Also I didn't like when he broke up the songs with action and didn't allow them to play out smoothly -- I thought it ruined "Look Down" and the Thenardier numbers.
